Hanging out in a hammock is one of my favorite things to do when camping or hiking. And sleeping in a hammock overnight? Bliss!
There’s one major issue when it comes to hammocking, though, and that’s mosquitos and other creepy-crawlers.
I’ve slept in a hammock overnight without a bug net once, and I’ll be honest with you: I’m never doing that again! The amount of daddy long-legs on (and in) my hammock was astounding, and the mosquitos were absolutely miserable. I was in the piney woods of east Texas, so I’m pretty surprised I didn’t get any ticks on that camping trip.

Options for hammocks with bug nets used to be pretty limited, but now it seems like they’re everywhere you look. Here are some things to consider when buying a hammock with mosquito net.
Attached vs Separate
You can either buy a hammock that has a bug net pre-attached, or you can buy a separate hammock and mosquito net. I think there are benefits to both, but I personally have a separate hammock and mosquito net. Here are the pros and cons of both setups.
Pros and Cons of Hammocks with Attached Bug Nets
The pros of having a hammock with an attached bug net are that the setup takes less time and you don’t have to worry about misplacing one or the other, because they’re always together.
The cons of attached bug nets are that you can’t ever just hang out in your hammock without the net surrounding you. With some attached nets, you can only lay in your hammock. I like to sit in my hammock like a swing sometimes, so I like to have it on it’s own.
Second, I sometimes get bit on my legs THROUGH my hammock fabric. I’ve personally never used an attached hammock with bug net, but mosquitos can definitely bite through fabric. Attached bug net hammocks only cover the top of you. This problem can probably be solved by laying on a blanket inside your hammock, but if it’s hot that might be miserable.
Pros and Cons of Separate Bug Nets for Hammocks
The pros of having a separate bug net are that you can choose whether or not you want to use the bug net. I rarely use the bug net unless it’s a really buggy area or if I’m planning on sleeping, otherwise I just set up my hammock on it’s own.
I also like that my bug net surrounds my entire hammock (and body) with protection. The bug net has a lot of space inside where I put my bag and shoes, so I don’t have to worry about spiders or other bugs crawling inside them while I sleep.
The cons of separate bug nets are that they don’t pack down as compact, because it’s two separate items. Also, some of them require a setup that’s almost as involved as setting up your hammock. But, some are easier.
Netting
When considering a hammock with a bug net, you obviously want the netting to be top-quality. Most bug netting that comes with hammocks are tightly woven and also provide protection against no-see-ums.
But you also want the netting to be lightweight enough to be breathable.
Treated vs Untreated
You can purchase a hammock and mosquito net that are treated with permethrin, a natural insect repellent made from compounds found in chrysanthemum flowers.
Permethrin kills insect, but is safe for humans and dogs. Hammocks and bug nets treated with permethrin give you an added layer of defense against insects.
You can also treat your hammock with a permethrin spray yourself, too.
Size and Weight
Size and weight are factors to consider, especially if you have limited space or are backpacking. Every ounce counts when you’re considering items for backpacking!
Most hammocks and mosquito nets pack down very small and stuff into their own carrying sacks.
Hanging Hardware
Not all hammocks come with hanging hardware included. This can be really annoying if you order a hammock and get ready to go camping, only to learn the hardware didn’t come with it!
You need tree straps and carabiners to hang most hammocks.
