How Many Hours Can You Be Paid For in a Year? (Annual Working Hours)
Calculating how many working hours are in a year can be a little trickier.
Many jobs have varying hours, and some vary every week. Because of this, it's hard to determine exactly how many working hours there are in a year.
Additionally, some people are paid a salary – which means they get paid a certain amount per year instead of by hours worked.
For the purposes of those working hourly, here's how you can determine how many working hours are in a year.
First, determine how many working days there are in a year. Since the average American work week is Monday through Friday, we'll go with that.
Each year has a different number of working days because each year starts on a different day of the week.
How Many Working Hours In a Year [Full Time Annual Work HoursChart]
This chart contains how many working hours are in a year from 2022 to 2025 based on the standard American work week.
For most full-time employees, the average work week in the United States is 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday. Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, 40 hours is the maximum amount of hours you can work before being paid overtime.
Working Hrs/Yr | 2022 | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 |
---|---|---|---|---|
Monday | 52 | 52 | 53 | 52 |
Tuesday | 52 | 52 | 53 | 52 |
Wednesday | 52 | 52 | 52 | 53 |
Thursday | 52 | 52 | 52 | 52 |
Friday | 52 | 52 | 52 | 52 |
Total Work Days | 260 | 260 | 262 | 261 |
Total Work Hours (Full Time) | 2,080 | 2,080 | 2,096 | 2,088 |
Keep in mind: these charts don't account for your vacation days or holidays. If you have those, work them in there.
How Many Working Hours in a Year [Part Time Work Hours Chart]
Part time jobs are a little harder to calculate. A part time job can range from around 20 hours a week to 35 hours per week.
This chart contains how many working hours are in a year for a part-time job of 30 hours a week.
Working Hrs/Yr | 2022 | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 |
---|---|---|---|---|
Monday | 52 | 52 | 53 | 52 |
Tuesday | 52 | 52 | 53 | 52 |
Wednesday | 52 | 52 | 52 | 53 |
Thursday | 52 | 52 | 52 | 52 |
Friday | 52 | 52 | 52 | 52 |
Total Work Days | 260 | 260 | 262 | 261 |
Total Work Hours (Full Time) | 1,040 | 1,040 | 1,048 | 1,044 |
If you want to adjust this for a different amount of hours per week, use the following formula.
First, determine how many hours you work per week. Then divide that number by 5.
So, for 20 hours a week, 20 / 5 = 4.
Then, multiply that number (4) by the total number of working days in the year.
So, for 2022, it would be:
4 x 260 = 1,040 part time working hours per year (based on 20 hours per week).
Remember, this doesn't include vacation time.
How to Calculate Hourly Pay to Yearly
Once you do the above calculations and find out exactly how many hours you work per year, you can calculate your annual hourly pay.
Here is the formula for calculating hourly pay to yearly pay.
Hours Worked Per Year x Hourly Wage.
So, if you make $20 per hour and work a full-time job of 40 hours a week, here's the calculation for the year 2022.
$20 (hourly rate) x 2,096 (work hrs/yr) = $41,920 yearly pay.
Note: this does not include paid vacation or other paid time off. it also doesn't include holiday hours or overtime hours.Â

How Many Hours are In a Month?
To find out how many hours are in a month, multiply the number of days in the month by the number of hours in a day (24).
To calculate how many hours are in a month, you need to know the number of days in the month.
This changes every month, as some months have 31 days and others have 30.
And depending on whether or not it's a leap year, February will either have 28 or 29 days.
Here are the number of days each month in a year:
Month | # of Days |
---|---|
January | 31 |
February | 28 |
March | 31 |
April | 30 |
May | 31 |
June | 30 |
July | 31 |
August | 31 |
September | 30 |
October | 31 |
November | 30 |
December | 31 |
So, to calculate the number of hours in a month, multiply the number of days in the month by 24 (hours in a day).
For example, for January:
31 (days) x 24 (hours) = 744 hours in January.
How Many Minutes in a Month?
To calculate the minutes in a month, multiply the total number of hours in the month by 60 – the number of minutes per hour.
So, for January, the equation is:
744 (hrs/mo) x 60 (mins/hr) = 44,640 minutes in January.
How Many Hours are In a Week?
There are 168 hours in a week.
This is because there are 24 hours in a day, and 7 days in a week.
To calculate this, simply multiply the number of hours in a day (24) by the number of days in a week (7).
24 x 7 = 168.
How Many Minutes in a Week?
There are 10,080 minutes in a week.
To arrive at this number, multiply the hours in a week by the minutes in an hour.
168 x 60 = 10,080.
What Do We Do With All This Time?
When you break it down by minutes, it sure seems like a lot of time is going by!
However, it's not a lot of time at all when you figure in things like work, family and home obligations, and the minimum amount of sleep you need to get.
A week has 168 hours.
A full-time job takes 40 hours, leaving you with 128 “free” hours.
But you still need to sleep! Most people need around 8 hours of sleep each night.
So, 8 hours of sleep for 7 nights a week totals 56 hours spent sleeping.
That leaves you with only 72 hours.
Then you need to factor in eating: 3 meals a day, in fact.
Meals vary in length, so let's just say you spend an hour preparing and eating each meal for 3 meals a day. However, on work days you get an hour lunch break.
So let's just say you spend 2 hours a day preparing meals and eating on work days, and 3 hours on weekends.
2 hours x 5 work days = 10 hours eating.
3 hours x 2 weekend days = 6 hours eating.
Combined, that's 16 hours of preparing food, eating, and cleaning up per week.
That leaves you with only 56 hours per week.
And 42 of those hours are free weekend hours.
Which mean you only really have 14 free hours during your work week for relaxing, doing household chores, taking care of your family, showering, getting ready, etc.
That works out to just 2.8 hours a day!
How Many Free Hours Are In a Year?
There are a total of 8,760 hours in a common year. How many of those are free if you're a full time employee?
There are 52 weeks in a year. So, if we go by a full time work week using the calculations I shared in the last section, here's how many free hours are in a common year.
Free work week hours per year: 728.
Free weekend hours per year: 2,184.
Total free hours per year: 2,912.
So what does this mean?
This means that only 33.24% of your entire year is yours to enjoy as “free-time” if you have a full-time job.
And if you have a family or other obligations, your free time is even less than that!
